Custom Fields
WIDS allows you to create custom fields for anything not part of the WIDS software. WIDS custom fields may be editable or uneditable to the user. All custom fields are WYSIWYG boxes.
Custom Fields can be added at the following levels. Only site level custom fields are added here.
- Site (to all programs or all courses)
- Program (to the program or child courses)
- Course (to the individual course)
Site Level Custom Fields
Site level custom fields apply to all programs or courses in the WIDS application. They can be editable by the end user, or not.
Potential Uses:
- Common statements that appear in every project.
- Common syllabi statements. You can modify the syllabus statements in this one location, and they update everywhere.
How to Create a Custom Field
- Create a new field.
- Enter default text (optional).
- Determine if the field is User Editable.
Tip: If you make a custom field read-only, the user will be able to view the field text, but not change it or add to it. If you do not check the User Editable box, the user will be able to view and modify the text.
- Select the project type for the field: Program or Course.
- Select tab for the custom field location—varies depending on project type chosen.
Custom fields assigned to a course will appear uneditable in the syllabus. Custom fields assigned to the syllabus, appear only in the syllabus. Custom Field Tips
Custom fields assigned to a course will appear uneditable in the syllabus. Custom fields assigned to the syllabus, appear only in the syllabus.
- Consider creating site level custom fields for organization-wide syllabus requirements. That way you can edit them from a single source if they change.
- Custom fields sort alphabetically by title. To over-ride that you might consider:
- Adding a number before the custom field title.
- Adding all custom statements in a single field. Use the WYSIWYG tools to create headers.
- If you want to add sample text for a custom field, make the field editable. Then a user can modify the data.
